NHMC’s President and CEO, Alex Nogales, was invited by the Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE) to media train a group of talented Latinas as part of its HOPE Leadership Institute (HLI). The HLI is the first and only statewide leadership program specifically designed for professional Latinas in California. The goal of the Institute is to train Latinas in vital leadership and advocacy skills, enabling them to create fundamental change within their local neighborhoods and across California. NHMC has a long history of media training Latina and Latino experts across various fields. In June 2014, NHMC launched the Latino Experts Program, funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, to increase the visibility of Latino experts in local news coverage. Over a two-year span, NHMC trained more than 100 Latino leaders, representing various fields of expertise and based in 12 television markets, to speak on television. “Latinos are an integral part of the American social fabric, but you wouldn’t know that from watching the news,” said Alex Nogales, a multiple Emmy Award-winning producer who led the trainings. “It’s time for the media to reflect reality. There are thousands upon thousands of Latino experts in their field, working to make this country better for all Americans. Latino views and faces are essential for balanced and responsible coverage, and yet they are still largely excluded. We now have the opportunity to transform this by elevating Latino perspectives on the issues shaping our country.” To learn more about NHMC’s Latino Experts Program, visit our website at www.nhmc.org/programs/latino-experts/.

D.C. Policy Shop Update

NHMC in D.C. – Pushing for Policies to Bring More Latinos Online unnamed (9)The FCC voted on March 31 to approve modernization of the Lifeline program. Lifeline currently offers a modest discount to low-income families struggling to afford basic landline or wireless phone service and will now expand to include broadband. Latinos face many barriers to getting online. A recent study showed only 50 percent of Latinos have access to home broadband, compared to 72 percent for their white counterparts. Latinos most frequently cite high cost as the primary reason for non-adoption. The number of Americans who subscribe to home broadband has declined significantly in recent years, lagging most among communities of color, the poor, seniors, people with disabilities and those with less formal education.

“Poor people are precisely the ones who need Internet service the most, for learning opportunities, job applications, health care needs, civic engagement and staying in touch, but are often the least connectedbecause they cannot afford the cost of getting and staying online,” said Jessica Gonzalez, NHMC Executive Vice President and General Counsel. “The FCC’s decision to modernize the Lifeline program will reduce the inequality that keeps communities of color from taking advantage of the the vital opportunities that the Internet brings. What’s more, with proper Internet access, the next generation of Latino storytellers can prepare to tell our stories to the world in an increasingly digital media market.” An ardent supporter of Lifeline for nearly a decade, the National Hispanic Media Coalition has been very active in the FCC’s ongoing modernization process over the past year, filing comments and reply comments. The vote comes at the heels of President Obama’s March 9 announcement, launching ConnectALL-an initiative that aims to connect 20 million more Americans to broadband by 2020. Along with the announcement, the Administration submitted comments to the FCC supporting proposed Lifeline modernization and released a study detailing the state of broadband adoption. NHMC recommended that the Administration support Lifeline modernization in its comments to the Broadband Opportunity Council last year and lauds the Administration for taking steps to help bridge the Digital Divide.
