Call to Action: Call KTLA to Drop John and Ken
The Take John and Ken Off the Air campaign is celebrating a long list of victories for the month of March. On March 12, NHMC released a
press releasecommending KTLA management for dropping "The John and Ken Show" from their daily news segment, "Driving it Home With John and Ken." Thanks to the pressure placed on KTLA by campaign supporters the airwaves are slowly clearing from John and Ken’s hate.
On March 21, the campaign celebrated its second victory after the passage of a Los Angeles City Council
resolution condemning hate speech and calling for diversity in the radio and television workforce. The resolution singles out KFI AM programming, including "The John and Ken Show" and "The Rush Limbaugh Show," and denounces their recent attacks on the community. The resolution passed by a majority, 13-2.
Organizations representing different sectors of the community came together to testify as to the harm and effects hate speech has on our communities. There to testify were NHMC, the Black Media Alliance, All Saints Episcopal Church of Pasadena, the Korean American Bar Association, and the Los Angeles Urban League.
Please stay tuned on twitter
@NHMC as we educate advertisers that continue to support John and Ken. Or you may e-mail

Tell Shareholders To Vote For Wireless Net Neutrality
For years, NHMC has stressed the importance of keeping the Internet open, so that consumers are able to access what they want, when they want it without interference from service providers. The FCC has rules in place to keep the Internet open over wired connections, but those rules don’t apply to our wireless Internet connections. For the first time, investors at various wireless companies will introduce open Internet proposals at the annual shareholder meetings of a number of top wireless companies – to attempt to secure change from the inside.
At their upcoming annual meetings in April and May, investors in these companies will finally have an opportunity to vote and call on the companies to uphold net neutrality policies on their wireless networks. Today, the telecom providers are free to speed up connections to websites and apps that pay for faster wireless service – undermining our free market on the internet and influencing how we use our smartphones and tablets. This is the first time the Securities and Exchange Commission has recognized that shareholders deserve to have a stake in net neutrality issues, and a unique opportunity for consumers to voice their concerns directly to business leaders.
Help make a mark on shareholders before they vote, and protect the future of an open Internet, by signing a petition on change.org.

Feature Documentary
Precious Knowledge Documentary Premiers May 17 on PBS
In 2010 Arizona’s controversial law, HB 2281, banned Ethnic Studies courses, eliminating Mexican American Studies in the state of Arizona. The film "Precious Knowledge" documents what is being called the most contentious battle in public education in recent history and follows the stories of several students enrolled in the Mexican American Studies program at Tucson High School. Through interviews with students, teachers, and school officials wishing to outlaw the program, this powerful documentary weaves the intricate story of how a program that boasted a 93% graduation rate for its students was effectively eliminated and banned by Arizona lawmakers.
