3rd Annual New York Impact Awards Reception
The
New York Impact Awards Reception, convened by the National Hispanic Media Coalition annually, honors journalists, media outlets, civil rights organizations, and community leaders amplifying the voices of Latinos. Reception guests, including renowned media influencers, celebrate the influence of our community in the city with the largest Latino population in the country and global media leadership.
This year's honorees include:

NHMC TV Writers Program Begins
The
NHMC Television Writers Program is an intensive scriptwriters workshop that prepares Latinos for writing jobs at the major television and cable networks. The five-week total immersion workshop is designed to hone participants' script-writing skills and prepare them to package and present their work to television and cable networks, as well as programming executives.

D.C. Policy Update
NHMC Opposed the Trump Administration's Extreme Vetting Information Collection Proposal
On October 3rd, NHMC joined 46 civil rights groups in a
letter to the State Department opposing the Trump Administration's extreme vetting information collection proposal. The policy would authorize collecting additional information from both immigrant and nonimmigrant visa applicants.
NHMC Files Joint Reply in Net Neutrality Proceeding in Response to NCTA and USTelecom's Opposition
On October 5th, NHMC filed a
Joint Reply in response to NCTA and USTelecom's Opposition along with eight additional organizations. The Joint Reply emphasizes that the FCC itself called the informal consumer complaints and related documents into question.
NHMC Advocated for the FCC and the Trump Administration to Employ Extraordinary Measures to Restore Communications in Puerto Rico
NHMC, alongside four partner organizations, sent a
letter to FCC Chairman Pai urging the Commission to implement additional measures to restore communications in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands in the wake of devastation left by Hurricanes Maria and Irma.
Additionally, Gloria Tristani, former FCC Commissioner and current Special Policy Advisor for NHMC wrote an opinion piece published on the Hill,
Puerto Ricans are Americans - they need as much help as any state.
Carmen Scurato, Director, Policy & Legal Affairs for NHMC, wrote an article on Medium,
Puerto Rico Urgently Needs More Help in Getting Connected, providing an overview of the current state of communications in Puerto Rico. Carmen also published a guest commentary in the National Institute for Latino Policy Report:

Alex Nogales, NHMC President & CEO, wrote letters to NBC, MSNBC, and ABC asking that they continue covering the devastation in Puerto Rico. They all assured Alex they would.
NHMC Urges FCC Chair to Condemn President Trump's Statements Regarding Broadcasters' First Amendment Rights
On October 13th, NHMC joined other groups, as well as former FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler and former Commissioners Michael J. Copps and Gloria Tristani, in
a letter to the FCC Chairman "urging him to publicly condemn President Donald Trump's threats to challenge the broadcast licenses of news media outlets he dislikes."
NHMC Hosted Discussion on How Algorithms Can Be Used As Tools of Oppression
NHMC partnered with the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights to host Cathy O'Neil, mathematician and author of
Weapons of Math Destruction, on October 18th in Washington, D.C. During her presentation, Ms. O'Neil explained how algorithms can be used as tools of oppression that disproportionately impact the poor, reinforce racism, and amplify inequality in our communities.
NHMC President & CEO Alex Nogales Pens Letter to Verizon
On October 18th, Alex Nogales wrote a letter to Verizon Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Lowell C. McAdam, strongly objecting to Verizon's decision to drop Univision from their line-up.
"The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) is outraged that at a time when catastrophic events have occurred in Mexico and Puerto Rico, Verizon has chosen to blackout Univision, the primary source of news for millions of Spanish-speaking and bilingual Latinos residing in the United States," said Alex in the letter.

Disney Pixar's Coco

In theaters November 22nd - Disney Pixar's brand new animated film,
Coco!
The film follows Miguel on his journey through the Land of the Dead, where he meets characters like Hector (played by Gael García Bernal) as he uncovers knowledge of his family history.
Coco's amazing cast includes Edward James Olmos, Natalia Cordova-Buckley, Benjamin Bratt, Jaime Camil, and more Latino talent!
According to the
Washington Post, the film "has the first wave of top reviewers waxing mostly positive, especially glowing over the effects (naturally), the emotion (to be expected) and what the movie represents in terms of diversity."
NHMC will be having its own private screening of the film, hosted by Disney, on November 15th, prior to the film's release.

Debby Wolfe, two of the talented writers staffed on the hit Netflix series and NHMC Impact Awards honoree
One Day at a Time to the Pasadena office to speak to current and past participants of the
NHMC Television Writers Program!
The panel was moderated by NHMC Executive Assistant, Jordan Rubio, who asked the writers about their experiences in the writers room. Both Badillo and Wolfe provided the NHMC writers with plenty of advice and inspiration as they move forward in their careers as Latino writers in the television industry.
