“Those of you who we honor here today play a pivotal role in ensuring that policy is made to protect Latinos and all people of color,” said Alex Nogales, president and CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition. “Now, more than ever, our communities need to be connected online to express themselves freely, access education and health care and continue to move up the economic ladder. What we celebrate today is the fact that we have these leaders who will never stop fighting to ensure that we are seen and heard in ways that can open minds and influence change.”
In accepting the Outstanding Public Service Impact award
Congresswoman Maxine Waters said:
"I am extremely honored and humbled to be the recipient of the Outstanding Public Service Award from an organization that I greatly admire and respect. The National Hispanic Media Coalition has demonstrated outstanding leadership in advocating for greater diversity in our nation's media landscape. I am so proud of the important work we did during the 2010-2011 Comcast-NBC merger proceedings, and I continue to stand with the NHMC today in the fight to protect a free and open internet for Latinos and other communities of color from the Trump Administration's efforts to end the net neutrality rules that we diligently fought to achieve.”
Senator Catherine Cortez Masto accepting the award for Outstanding Public Service stated:
“Thank you to Alex Nogales, and to everyone at the Hispanic Media Coalition, for honoring me with this award. Latinos have made amazing strides in the arts, media, and government over the past few decades, but significant challenges remain. I look forward to working with the Hispanic Media Coalition in breaking down barriers for our community, protecting the freedom of the press, and in ensuring that our voices and stories are heard.”
Angela Campbell, Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Institute for Public Representation, in accepting the Outstanding Advocate Impact Award stated:
“I appreciate receiving this award from NHMC for my advocacy. Without advocacy at the FCC and the courts by NHMC, my organization -- the Institute for Public Representation at Georgetown Law -- and others, we would not have public interest policies promoting goals such as a diverse and responsive media and affordable, non-discriminatory access to telecommunications services. But such policies goals are being undermined by recent FCC actions to allow massive media consolidation and to cut back aid that helps low-income families afford essential services. NHMC’s recognition of advocates will, I hope, inspire more people to fight against such changes and to advocate for a communications policy serving the public rather than corporate interests and providing equal opportunities for Latinos, people of color and women.”
For seven years, NHMC has honored individuals from the Washington, D.C. area who are working to enact policies that that benefit people of color. Past honorees include Senator Robert Menendez, Senator Ed Markey, Congresswoman Anna G. Eshoo, Congresswoman José E. Serrano, Congressman Ben Ray Luján, Congressman Raúl Grijalva, Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, FCC Commissioners Mignon Clyburn, Jessica Rosenworcel and then-FCC Commissioner Michael J. Copps, and then-Congresswoman Hilda Solis.
NHMC’s title reception sponsor is the National Association of Broadcasters. Platinum sponsors include Sprint, PBS, Univison and Fusion TV.
