SATURDAY, MARCH 3: AS HOLLYWOOD CELEBRATES 90TH OSCARS®, DEMONSTRATION MARKS DECADES OF LATINO UNDERREPRESENTATION BY FILM INDUSTRY EXECUTIVES

HOLLYWOOD, CALIF. - As Hollywood prepares to celebrate the 90th Oscars® awards ceremony, the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) Action Network will hold the second of two demonstrations protesting the decades-long exclusion of Latinos from on-screen and behind-the-camera roles by motion picture executives. The demonstrations launch a national campaign targeting studio executives attending the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences events. The campaign is part of NHMC's ongoing efforts to increase positive media portrayals of Latinos and increase Latino employment in the film industry. The March 3 protest follows a similar Jan. 23 demonstration and NHMC's Impact Awards gala, held Feb. 23, which recognizes the contributions of Latinos to the television and motion picture industry. The NHMC Action Network represents independent writers and producers, and casting, production and entertainment marketing companies. WHEN Saturday, March 3, 2018 11 a.m. - Demonstration 11:30 a.m. - Program WHY Greater Los Angeles is home to the film and television industry and the largest Latino population in the U.S., whose 56 million Latinos represent 18 percent of the country's population and 24 percent of all movie ticket buyers. Yet, Latinos remain one of the most underrepresented minorities in Hollywood.

• Latinos held only 3.1 percent of all movie speaking roles from 2007-2016 while representation among back-of-camera positions, such as writers and directors, was just as dismal.
• Of 900 popular films produced from 2007-2016, only one film was directed by a Latina.
• No Latinas were featured in 72 of the top 100 films produced in 2016.

WHERE The demonstration and speakers program will begin at the intersection of Highland Ave. and Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood.
