[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Earlier today Reddit, the social media platform, chose to stand up against online hate and ban subreddits, forums, and users that promote hate based on “identity or vulnerability” from its site. As a first step to enforce this stronger policy against hate, Reddit banned nearly 2,000 subreddits, including The_Donald, a popular micro community that frequently spews hate, misogyny, and homophobia in support of Donald Trump. YouTube also chose to stand against online hate by banning a number of accounts, including that of David Duke, Stefan Molyneux, and Richard Spencer–publicly known and self-identified white supremacists. This is a part of a larger crackdown against hate from YouTube since summer of 2019. These steps are critically important and send a strong message to those who use hate to divide, target, and abuse our communities online. As a founding member of the Change the Terms coalition, NHMC commends YouTube and Reddit’s actions and encourages bold action to ensure that all can enjoy an online experience free from hate, racism, and harassment. As our country continues to fight the pandemics of COVID-19 and racism, NHMC calls on those with influence to join us in demanding the elimination of symbolic, wide-spread white supremacy and hate online.
