[vc_column_text]A Statement from Brenda Victoria Castillo, President & CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC)
The National Hispanic Media Coalition has the honor of congratulating President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris on their campaign and election. It is not lost on me, as a Latinx Native woman, the gravity which this momentous and historic moment holds.
This election, NHMC is so proud to see record Latinx voter turnout in nearly all 50 states. For years, our organization and other Latinx civil rights organizations have laid strategies to ensure that Latinx voters had the resources, support, and pathways to voting this election. While we continue to fight for recognition, representation, social justice, and continued support to the sustainability of the Latinx voter turnout, we are so grateful to every organizer, campaigner, and community leader who fought to ensure our communities’ vote this election cycle. We also recognize those that cannot yet vote, and know that the fight for those voices to be heard will continue well beyond this election. It is for the communities that we serve, that we will continue to hold the new--and any--administration accountable for their policies and enforcement of said policies.
This is a reminder that, despite unprecedented efforts by Donald Trump and his supporters to disenfranchise voters and force a dishonest win, the voice of the people has prevailed. People’s votes and voices mattered in this election, and we will join our civil rights allies to defend the foundation and peaceful transition of power in this country. The most powerful check and balance we have is the resiliency and power of our communities.
We are sharply focused on what is to come. It is our top priority to hold the Trump administration accountable through the remainder of his tenure, and to lay the foundation for a transition of administrations that prioritizes Latinx leadership. In particular, NHMC looks forward to working with the new administration to close the digital divide, eliminate online hate speech, and increase the authentic representation of Latinx in media, film, streaming, and television. NHMC will continue its work to ensure that institutions of power, including the Biden-Harris administration, work towards a more equitable and just society for us all.
