A Statement by Brenda V. Castillo, President & CEO, National Hispanic Media Coalition
The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) congratulates Commissioner Alvaro Bedoya for his confirmation to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Vice President Kamala Harris’ vote broke the 50-50 tie in the Senate, which now makes the FTC a Democratic majority.
NHMC has long advocated for the representation of Latino leaders in Washington D.C. so that the United States government may truly represent this country.
As an immigrant from Peru, Bedoya understands how a lack of digital access can have vast implications that disproportionately affect Latinx and communities of color. With over a decade of experience in privacy and civil rights, he will adequately address the increasingly common threats of extremism, hate speech, and disinformation that come with technology and social media. His confirmation is a moment of pride and honor for the Latinx community.
NHMC commends the Biden-Harris Administration on this historic nomination and congratulates Commissioner Bedoya on his confirmation to the FTC. We look forward to his highly qualified leadership at the Commission to advocate for those most affected by privacy and technology exploitation.
Yours in the Movement,
Brenda Victoria Castillo
