NHMC Calls for Suspension of All Professional Golf Tournaments on Trump Courses

(PASADENA, Calif. - 7/16/15) – Donald Trump continues his bigoted tirades against Mexicans while trying to rewrite history by saying his racist comments were aimed at the Mexican government, not its people. In his June 16 Presidential announcement, Trump said:

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you … They’re sending people that have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, they’re rapists, and some, I assume, are good people.”

“He was talking about the Mexican people not the Mexican government,” said Alex Nogales, President/CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC). “By attempting to change the narrative, he insults us further and gives us little choice but to continue our campaign against him and his brand.” Today, NHMC sent additional letters today to the LPGA, the PGA Tour and the USGA, urging them to end their relationships with Trump and the Trump Organization. SEE: NHMC Letters to the LPGA, PGA Tours and USGA (www.nhmc.org) The PGA of America pulled its Grand Slam tournament, scheduled for October 2015 at Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles, and NHMC applauded it for doing so. However, NHMC requests that the PGA of America pull the Grand Slam from that course in years to come, as well as the 2022 PGA Championship and the 2017 Senior PGA Championship from Trump’s courses, in addition to any yet announced tournaments slated for Trump courses. In addition, NHMC has asked the LPGA, the PGA Tour and USGA to follow suit and pull out of their Trump-based commitments, such as:

• The 2016 World Golf Championship-Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral;
• The Puerto Rico Open at Trump International Golf Club Puerto Rico;
• The Barclays Championship at Trump Golf Links Ferry Point;
• Ricoh Women’s British Open at Trump Turnberry; and
• The 2017 U.S. Women's Open at Trump National Bedminster.

The PGA of America has taken a solid first step in demonstrating its commitment to an inclusive and welcoming environment in the game of golf, and its now time for the PGA of America to go all in, and for the remaining golf organizations to demonstrate that same commitment. For more than a month, the Latino community has banded together to show that Trump's comments on immigrants, and in particular the Mexican American community, will not be ignored nor swept under the rug. In addition to causing a warranted national uproar with many businesses and celebrities, including NBC, Univision, Macy's and ESPN ending their relationships, many organizations, such as the PGA of America and the LA Unified School District, have removed their tournaments and events from Trump Golf Courses.
