Fernandomania Forever

October 23, 2024

A Statement from Brenda Victoria Castillo, President & CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC)

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Fernando Valenzuela, a cultural icon who left a lasting mark on the world of sports and the hearts of many. As a proud Mexican immigrant, Fernando led our community with grace and talent, proving that the power of determination knows no borders. Through his extraordinary career, he sought to bridge cultural divides, demonstrating that immigrants contribute immensely to the fabric of this country.

Fernando’s story was one of perseverance, resilience, and unyielding pride in his heritage. His incredible journey, from a small town in Mexico to the pitching mound of the Los Angeles Dodgers, inspired millions and reminded us all of the richness that comes from embracing diverse voices and experiences. His legacy extends beyond the field—he was a symbol of hope and possibility for generations of Latinos.

We were honored to present Fernando Valenzuela with an NHMC Impact Award in 2017, a testament to his enduring contributions to both the sports world and our broader cultural landscape. Today, we remember and celebrate a life that accomplished so much and inspired countless others to dream big. Rest in power, Fernando. Your legacy and Fernandomania will live on in the hearts of many.

Yours in Movement,

Brenda Victoria Castillo
