NHMC Amplifies Literature and Organizations Uplifting the LGBTQ+ Community
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]With a record amount of book bans in 2022, LGBTQ+ writers are fighting back against targeted hate. These LGBTQ+ authors’ works are essential to the human experience as they depict reflections of injustices towards marginalized communities and the complex nature of youth and self-identification.
The National Hispanic Media Coalition stands by these LGBTQ+ authors as they combat the rising number of banned books. Here are a few to support and uplift.
From non-binary author, George M. Johnson, comes All Boys Aren’t Blue. A book that shares what it’s like growing up Black and Queer in a world that makes you feel out of place.
Ever been a Queer Latine teenager growing up in a Catholic environment? Then be sure to check out The Lesbiana's Guide To Catholic School, by Bestselling Author, Sonora Reyes. This young adult novel is not only meant for young adults.
For fans of graphic novels, Flamer, by author and artist Mike Curato, is based on Curato’s experiences as a young, gay boy whose life changes while at summer camp. If you’re in to coming of age stories then you’ll love this one.

The Biden Administration released it’s new enforcement efforts on Title 42. The ruling states asylum seekers must seek solace in other surrounding countries while waiting for approval to enter the United States with approved asylum. Those who enter unlawfully, will be subject to deportation and banned from entering the U.S. for five years. The Immigration Equality, Lawyers for Good Government, and the Transgender Law Center are advocating for removal of the asylum ban. According to the Federal Registrar report released in May 2023, “the ban makes asylum presumptively unavailable for refugees if they do not: (1) first seek asylum in a transit country – countries that are notoriously dangerous for Queer and Trans people, or (2) wait in Mexico – where LGBTQ+ refugees are routinely brutalized – for an appointment with immigration officials through a notoriously inaccessible mobile app, or (3) access the U.S. through one of the very limited parole programs that are unavailable to refugees from most countries, and inaccessible to poor people.”
Legislation at the state levels are engaging their effort towards orders for sanctuary states. Organizations focused their efforts and governors signed executive orders making sanctuary states in Maryland with Trans Right Advocacy Coalition & Trans Maryland; and in New York with New Pride Agenda.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image="26818" img_size="large" alignment="center"][vc_column_text]
