Historic Golden Globes Night!

Statement on Behalf of Brenda Victoria Castillo, President and CEO, National Hispanic Media Coalition, on 2025 Golden Globe Award Recipients

The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) proudly celebrates the Latine excellence showcased at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards. With recognition across both film and television, Latine entertainers shined brightly, honoring the lasting legacy of our culture and community.

We extend our congratulations to Zoe Saldaña on her first Golden Globe win for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture for her work in Emilia Pérez, and to Fernanda Torres for her win as Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama, for her role in I’m Still Here, making her the first Brazilian actress to receive this honor.

In the evening's highest honors, Emilia Pérez was recognized as Best Film, Comedy or Musical, and Best Motion Picture, Non-English Language, making history with the most nominations of any film at the Golden Globes. Last night was also a celebration of women and sisterhood, and we would like to congratulate Nikki Glaser for becoming the first woman to host the Golden Globes by herself in the show’s 82 years. We would also like to acknowledge those who uplift our community, like Jodi Foster, who won the award for Best Female Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for her role in True Detective: Night Country, shouting out NHMC Impact Award-winning writer and director Issa López, her co-star Kali Reis, and the Indigenous people who worked on the series and inspired the story. During the award ceremony, we saw Hollywood's actresses over 50 take center stage, with Demi Moore winning Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for her role in The Substance and Jean Smart winning Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy for her role in Hacks, showing us that regardless of age, talent has the power to captivate audiences across genres.

Winners and stars from last night’s show, including Wicked director Jon M. Chu and The Brutalist actor Adrien Brody, shared the vital role that immigration played in their lives and how the sacrifices their immigrant parents made ultimately led to their success. Actress Karla Sofía Gascón spoke truth to power while accepting on behalf of Emilia Pérez and shared, "The light always wins over darkness. You can maybe put us in jail. You can beat us up, but you never can take away our soul, our existence, our identity. And I want to say to you: Raise your voice for freedom.” Gascón’s sentiments highlight the continued need to fight for the visibility and protections for the trans community across our country.

The 82nd annual Golden Globes demonstrated that our differences, backgrounds, and cultures hold the power to transform hearts and minds across the entertainment industry. While companies and organizations are moving away from DEI, last night’s Golden Globes Awards wins, nominations, and mentions are a testament to DEI efforts as a cornerstone practice in our culture that has the potential to elevate and create opportunities for all people.

We look forward to seeing Latine and diverse talent celebrated throughout the 2025 awards season and sharing our stories across all forms of entertainment.

Yours in Movement,

Brenda Victoria Castillo
