In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) announces the launch of ‘
Seeing Beyond Information Fraud: Practical Transparency - A Guide for the Informed Individual,' a new guide and resource put forth by their
Spanish Language Disinformation Coalition providing practical strategies to recognize and address information fraud.
Information fraud continues to become a growing threat undermining the integrity of our democratic processes and disproportionately affecting marginalized communities. Seeing Beyond Information Fraud is a living document that will constantly evolve to meet the needs of the Latine community, equipping everyday people, consumers, community members, and our families with the knowledge to identify, counter, and prevent the spread of false information.
“The U.S is the second largest Spanish-speaking country in the world and we hope this guide reaches our community, who are constantly targeted with false or misleading information in Spanish. As the Latine community celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month, NHMC hopes to use this moment to educate, promote, and reflect civic engagement in the Latine community by making us aware of the harmful rhetoric currently tarnishing our community every day,” said Brenda Victoria Castillo, President and CEO, National Hispanic Media Coalition. “Our Spanish Language Disinformation Coalition is proud to offer this resource for everyday consumers to recognize, identify, and combat information fraud.”
As a woman-led non-profit civil and human rights organization, NHMC is proud to provide this resource in English and Spanish for everyone to access free of charge. Information fraud is a serious issue that can alter elections and unfairly target vulnerable groups. This guide will inform everyday consumers and families on key characteristics and sources of Information fraud, along with tools to counter it. Seeing Beyond Information Fraud provides various resources for consumers to submit online content for verification.
As part of their mission, NHMC’s Spanish Language Disinformation Coalition works tirelessly to protect against the divisive and dangerous threats posed to Spanish-speaking communities. The Coalition defends the fundamental and equitable rights of all to express themselves, access information, and engage in the open exchange of ideas online.
