The National Hispanic Media Coalition Demands a Congressional Investigation Into the Deaths of Vanessa Guillen and Gregory Morales

Dear Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader McConnell,
The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) urges you to open an official congressional investigation into the circumstances–both systemic and localized–of the possible assault and murder of Vanessa Guillen and Gregory Morales at the Ford Hood military base in Texas.
Despite ongoing, widespread anti-Latinx sentiment and discrimination in the United States, young Latinx proudly enlist in the military to fight for the freedom of our country. Latinx do this based on the assumption that while they are serving our country, U.S. military leaders will ensure their well-being, safety, and survival are top priority. Based on recent events and overarching trends in treatment of Latinx soldiers, this basic right of safety and survival is not extended to women and Latinx members of our military.
It is absolutely unacceptable that we do not have a well-established process to independently investigate the disappearance of members of our military. We respectfully request for you to use your influence as The Speaker of the United States House Representatives to demand an independent investigation and provide truthful and transparent answers to the Guillen and Morales families.

Yours in the Movement,
Brenda Victoria Castillo
