NHMC Applauds Biden Administration for Historic Latina Commissioner Nomination
A Statement from Brenda Victoria Castillo, President & CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC)
We at the National Hispanic Media Coalition are elated with President Biden’s decision to nominate Anna Gomez to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). This decision aligns with our mission, as it means bringing intelligent, experienced, steady, and dedicated public service into a role of substantial influence for our community. This is a monumental step forward for our community, as it has been over two decades since a Latino commissioner has represented our community via one of the agency’s five commissioner seats. As nearly 20 percent of the United States population, having a Latino voice on the Commission is crucial for the digital age.
Anna Gomez's experience in telecommunications policy and her dedication to public service create a synergy that will benefit the FCC immensely. Her steadiness and intelligence have been evident throughout her career, and her nomination signals a promising future for the FCC as it works to prevent digital discrimination, restore net neutrality protections, and continue to connect millions of people via the Affordable Connectivity Program. With her expertise and dedication, Anna Gomez will be a relentless force for equal access, championing communication opportunities for all.
Anna Gomez's nomination to the FCC is a game-changer for the Latino community, but it's not a done deal. The U.S. Senate must act now, swiftly confirming her through a vote. Anna Gomez’s confirmation is crucial because it will restore the full five-member Commission, breaking the current FCC deadlock and empowering the FCC to tackle our ever-evolving tech landscape.
The National Hispanic Media Coalition has been unapologetic about getting a Latino appointed to the FCC under the Biden-Harris Administration. The nomination of Anna Gomez is not only a testament to her exceptional qualifications but also an acknowledgment of the importance of representation in our federal government. We are confident that her appointment will contribute significantly to the advancement and excellence of Latino communities across the nation.
Yours in the Movement,
Brenda Victoria Castillo
