NHMC 2024 Policy Wins!

December 19, 2024

✨The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) deeply appreciates your support over the past year! We couldn’t have made all these amazing programs and events happen without your generous support. As we approach the end of the year, we invite you to join us in continuing this important mission by donating to one of our many programs, initiatives and campaigns. Your partnership makes all the difference!✨

Our Policy Work Highlights:

At NHMC we have made significant strides in advancing policies that foster equity, inclusion, and justice across the media, technology, and civil rights sectors in 2024. With a deep commitment to empowering underrepresented communities, NHMC has championed initiatives that uplift diverse voices and ensure representation in various spaces. Below are some of the key policy wins and advocacy efforts that have driven meaningful change this past year.

Spanish Language Disinformation Coalition (SLDC):

As a leader in the fight against discrimination, NHMC directs the Spanish Language Disinformation Coalition (SLDC) to protect Latine communities from harmful narratives.

In 2024, NHMC released Seeing Beyond Information Fraud: Practical Transparency – A Guide for the Informed Individual, a comprehensive, bilingual, living resource for consumers navigating information fraud. This guide has been shared with over 150 members of Congress, including Senator Cortez-Masto and Representative Linda Sánchez, and has received national and international attention from outlets such as The LA Times, AFP, and Voz de America.

Latino Representation in Gaming Coalition (LRGC):

In 2024, NHMC launched the Latino Representation in Gaming Coalition (LRGC), a powerful initiative that brings together partners to promote diversity and inclusion in the gaming industry. With partners such as Representative Joaquin Castro and Latinx in Gaming. The coalition addresses the underrepresentation of Latines in the gaming industry, advocating for authentic character portrayals, greater workforce representation, and an inclusive gaming environment that reflects the diversity of Latine cultures.

Collaborating with the FCC:

NHMC's advocacy has extended to landmark civil rights issues, including support for the FCC's Prevention and Elimination of Digital Discrimination rulemaking and the Affordable Connectivity Program, which seeks to bridge the digital divide for underserved communities. In collaboration with the FCC, NHMC also helped shape the cultural adaptation of Wireless Emergency Alerts in Spanish to ensure effective communication in times of crisis for Latine communities.

Our work in civil rights continued as we urged the White House to increase funding for the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights and highlighted the lack of Latino and Asian representation in the planning of the 2028 Olympics.

Shaping Federal Policy:

NHMC played a key role in shaping federal policy discussions, providing insightful public comments on issues such as AI-generated political content, climate disinformation, and tech leadership. Our strong support for the Artificial Intelligence Civil Rights Act of 2024 ensures that new technologies align with civil rights protections, setting a precedent for the future of tech governance.

Notably, NHMC’s policy team advised the Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission on media mergers, solidifying our role as a trusted thought partner on issues of equity and representation in the evolving media landscape.

Latino Representation in Publishing Coalition (LRPC):

NHMC led transformative efforts in the publishing sector as part of the Latino Representation in Publishing Coalition (LRPC). The coalition pushed for increased Latine visibility in published works and leadership roles within publishing organizations, while also fighting against book bans to ensure our communities’ diverse stories are protected and being told. Latinos make up nearly 20% of the US population, but only account for 8% of employees in publishing.

2024 Policy Fellowship:

NHMC had the pleasure of continuing our Policy Fellowship. It offers college students and recent graduates a unique opportunity to support advocacy work in digital equity, telecommunications, technology, civil rights, and media policy. Our fellows are essential to NHMC’s mission for greater diversity and inclusion in media and technology, as they bring new and unique perspectives.
