A Statement from Brenda Victoria Castillo, President & CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC)
Each year from September 15 through October 15, the United States has the privilege to celebrate Latino/x/es, and learn more about the incredible and beautiful diverse cultures in our vibrant community. While this month is so important for both Latino/x/es and allies, we know that one month is not enough! For us, every day is a celebration of our families, cultures, and passion.
This year, in particular, I am excited to celebrate Latinas. In fact, I’m calling it the year of the Latina! At NHMC, we kicked off Latino/x/e Heritage Month with our Impact Awards Gala, honoring the accomplishments and talent of Latino/x/es in Hollywood. Not only did we have phenomenal Latina EmCees and honorees, but the entire event was put together by our majority Latina team.
I’m so proud to be Latina at a time when the world is finally catching up to our power and impact. With each additional Latina in a leadership position, we begin to heal as a community. Silenced and disregarded for much too long, amidst a year of attacks on our bodily autonomy and fundamental rights, Latinas are overdue for recognition, investment, and elevation.
So help us celebrate this year by uplifting Latinas in your life. It can be as easy as submitting their name for an opportunity or as grand as investing in a Latina’s big idea. Happy Latino/x/e Heritage Month, familia!
Yours in the Movement,
Brenda Victoria Castillo
