Latino-led films to be added to the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress
Statement on Behalf of Brenda Victoria Castillo, President and CEO, National Hispanic Media Coalition on 2024 National Film Registry at the Library of Congress
The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) proudly celebrates the selection of impactful films for the 2024 Library of Congress National Film Registry. This prestigious registry is committed to preserving films that define our nation’s culture, identity, and history, ensuring these cinematic milestones are recognized and cherished for generations to come.
At NHMC, we firmly believe that storytelling is a powerful tool to reclaim narratives about who we are, highlighting why our communities' perspectives and experiences matter. The inclusion of films that showcase Latine, Indigenous, and broader BIPOC stories cements their place in history, shaping the future of filmmaking.
This year’s selections honor bold, authentic, and diverse stories, with a spotlight on the Latine community. They underscore the importance of uplifting underrepresented and often marginalized voices.
I am especially proud to see Latine films like Up in Smoke, American Me, Mi Familia, and Spy Kids celebrated alongside films that feature BIPOC talent, including Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Ganja & Hess, Uptown Saturday Night, and Powwow Highway. These selections are a testament to the enduring power of representation and diverse storytelling to inspire, educate, and transform.
As a member of the United States Library of Congress National Film Preservation Board, I am committed to celebrating diverse films and ensuring that underrepresented stories continue to receive visibility in future National Film Registry selections.
